Springfield, Crestview students collecting gifts for people in need
For last 28 years, two teachers at Springfield Local Schools and Crestview Local Schools collaborate to host a community holiday gift exchange with their students.
Melanie Workman is a guidance counselor at Springfield Intermediate, and her husband Scott Workman teaches eighth grade science at Crestview.
They had the idea to start the collection as a way to help people in need throughout their community.
Since it began, the program has brought in a total of over 28,000 goods and gifts for community members.
This year, the students collected approximately 700 gifts, including toys, nonperishable food items, baby items like diapers, bottles and blankets, clothing and school supplies.
Crestview teacher and Springfield alum Matt Evans is currently leading the efforts at Crestview throughout the month.
YSU professor bestowed Mr. and Mrs. William B. Clayman professorship in Judaic and Holocaust studies
Adam Fuller is an associate professor at Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Education at Youngstown State University.
This month, Fuller was designated with a professorship from the family of William B. Clayman.
The William B. Clayman Professorship in Judaic and Holocaust Studies was bestowed to Fuller during a ceremony at 3 p.m. on Dec. 4 in DeBartolo Hall.
“I am very happy to have been made the Clayman professor, and I really appreciate the Clayman family for creating this endowment back in 2003. It’s a very important thing for our community,” said Fuller.
William and Hilda Clayman established this endowment at YSU to support Judaic and Holocausr studies in memory of their son, David.
“The Clayman Family wishes to congratulate Dr. Fuller on his bestowal of the Professorship of Judaic and Holocaust Studies,” said Gary Clayman, son of William and Hilda Clayman. “Dr. Fuller, good luck in this position. The Clayman Family wishes you all the best.”
Fuller has been at YSU since 2012.
According to YSU, the yearly funds from this endowment will be used at the discretion of the professor of Jewish studies, the dean of the college of arts and sciences under the advisement of the Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department and the committee for the Judaic and Holocaust Studies program.
The funds can be used to expand course offerings in Jewish studies, student field experience, a library and a speaker series.
Austintown student chosen as an Ohio Connections Academy star student of the month
Brady Baker is a fourth grader at Ohio Connections Academy, the statewide online public charter school, who lives in Austintown.
Baker was recognized as one of this month’s star students; he was recognized with a certificate and got a ‘shout-out’ in the newsletter.
Baker came to Ohio Connections Academy in 2019 to be in a learning environment where he can work at his own pace with the flexibility to work any time it fits his schedule.
“With the flexibility of Ohio Connections Academy, I can work at my pace and not have to follow a set time schedule,” said Baker. “So I can get my days done early, leaving plenty of day left for fun and baseball.”
According to Baker, his favorite subject is science because he “learns a lot of cool stuff.” He also appreciates the help and support he receives from his teachers.
“The faculty, staff and members of the board at Ohio Connections Academy are proud to recognize students like Brady and the commitment they demonstrate to our school and their community,” said OCA Superintendent Marie Hanna. “Each of our Star Students is a leader in the classroom and demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to learning – they truly deserve this recognition.”
